"10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people." (Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV)
Today is Veterans’ Day and last Tuesday was Election Day. How are they related? Regardless of how you voted, you are aware of the great divide between the beliefs and political philosophies of our country. How do we proceed now? While we honor the men and women who serve and have served in the military, we must enter into this battle for ideas, like disciplined warriors, with God’s help.
Our job is clearly stated. We are to be ready with our greatest weapon, a powerful love, to help our congress-people work together for the good of our nation. We are to fight for truth and arm ourselves with righteousness (adhere to high, moral principles). We are to seek peace while resting in the pure peace of God. And, we are to believe—to hold a powerful faith in the ability of God to bring goodness out of life’s challenges. We are to claim our salvation and immerse ourselves in the word of God. We are to wrap it all in prayer that lives and moves in the heart of the Holy Spirit.
Walk moment by moment, day by day, within the heart of God. Do not be fooled. Seek only truth. Pray unceasingly for the Holy Spirit to sweep through the halls of congress to bless and change the heart of every person there. Pray that they ALL are lifted up to become the great leaders they have the potential to be. True leaders sit at the feet of God and learn ways to overcome the ills of the country. They work to strengthen our nation, the blessed country you conceived within your infinite wisdom. The weak struggle to lift up the weakest. Only the strong have the strength to gather up those in need and lift them higher than they had been before. Great wealth can only be shared once. Put on your full armor and be strong. Let us pray:
"Holy Father, author and architect of our great nation, we bow before your perfect love. We are embarking on a time when respect and cooperation could not only restore strength to our country but could also bring about a new era of prosperity. Fill our leaders with your extravagant love and remove their egos from the serious work of government. Overflow them with a spirit of cooperation for the good of all people. Surprise them with the ability to truly see the other side of each argument and the wisdom and courage to set aside political loyalty in order to find truth and to bring about solutions. Bless them all that they may go down in history as the congress that loved their country more than self and more than unworkable ideas thrust upon a great people. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen"
